Stratasys | nTopology Design Competition: Jigs & Fixtures

Join us for a 6-week engineering competition to show your most innovative and impactful, additively manufactured fixture or tool design and win big.

Did you know that jigs and fixtures account for more than 10% of all end-use 3D printed parts in the world? However, designing custom fixtures can be unwieldy and incredibly time-consuming with traditional CAD software.

Along with Stratasys, we developed the FDM Fixture Generator —  an nTop workflow that allows you to create a custom fixture with a few clicks. You can take that final design and send it directly to your FDM printer.

Now we are giving you the opportunity to experience, practice, and demonstrate innovative and impactful FDM fixture and tool design. We want you to take advantage of the intuitive, powerful FDM Fixture Generator creating customizable, lightweight fixtures and features, and get a taste for the power of nTopology.

For this competition, we have two tracks: the professional track and the student track. Here’s how to participate in the appropriate track.

Professional Submissions

To participate, please see the steps below:

Steps to Participate:

  1. Request your nTopology trial license
  2. Sign up for the GrabCAD community (You now have access to the entire community: download & upload models, tutorials, and enter challenges.)
  3. Create your jig or fixture using nTopology
  4. Upload model to GrabCAD and tag to the 3D Printed Fixture & Tool Design Competition
  5. You have now entered your submission to the competition

Important: We are asking all participants to use nTopology in their design submissions and so we are giving all participants access to a free, 6-week trial of our software. Judging requirements can be found on the GrabCAD design competition page

Please note: This competition is only open to users in the US and Canada. Employees of nTopology and Stratasys are not eligible.

Academic Submissions

To participate, you must use an EDU email. Please see the steps below:

Steps to Participate:

  1. Request your nTopology academic license

Important: We are asking all participants to use nTopology in their design submissions. Since you are a student, you are entitled to a free one-year, non-commercial, academic license of nTopology. Judging requirements can be found on the GrabCAD design competition page.

Design Brief: 3D Printed Casting of 3-Foot Long Robot Arm

3D printed sand casting molds and cores are changing the way high-performance, large metal parts are manufactured today. Additive manufacturing is enabling modern foundries to produce complex metal parts in rapid lead times. This article explains the benefits of coupling advanced design tools with 3D printed sand molds using, as an example, the redesign and manufacture of a 3-foot long robotic arm.
